Virus and large protein purification...a totally NEW approach
BIA Separations have developed a NEW and UNIQUE monolithic chromatography material designed for ultrafast purification of large molecular weight species including proteins, virus particles and pDNA.
CIM® (Convective Interaction Media) is a radically NEW approach which allows such ultralarge products to be captured at astonishing speed from even dilute preparations. Mass transport of such products from solution/suspension is so much more efficient than with particulate resins, and direct scaleup is possible to multi-litre manufacturing scale.
The speed of operation for CIM® materials has to be seen to be believed. Capture of virus particles within the matrix offers high capacity product concentration for the first time with normal chromatographic principles and familiar capture chemistries.
How does it work?
A RIGID single unit of polymerised porous material is cast into a column format. The extraordinary high porosity that is achieved permits convective flow of mobile phase through the material. This transports large proteins and even particulate viruses and plasmid DNA directly to the binding sites with mass transfer efficiency that cannot be matched with conventional chromatography particles.
CIM® material resists compression force at elevated flow rates which would normally cause high flow resistance and bed compression with traditional particulate chromatography media, and thus allows high convective flow for the largest of biological products. This unique feature of CIMŽ materials confers a totally new dimension to the terms...
